Shochu has had its moment.  Rose is overdone.  Champagne hurts the pocketbook… So if I had to guess, I would say that sparkling sake is set to be the newest summer refreshment of 2009.  Lighter than shochu, sparkling sake usually has about half the alcohol content of traditional sake – though it also comes in unfiltered (nigori) and clear styles like the original.  Its fizz, fruit, and crisp sweetness makes it great for drinking straight from the bottle or even for toasting.  Personally, I find it to be a fun alternative to prosecco – and even more affordable!

I’d like to share with you a new sparkling sake which has struck my fancy.  Star Rabbit Hoshi Usagi, bottled by the Banzai Beverage Corporation right here in Torrance, is a sparkling sake with flavors of fresh blueberry and tart pomegranate.  It is a sweet-sour sake that is light and flavorful enough to act as a wonderfully stimulating apéritif.  Absolutely delicious!  I wish I had some right now!

I have a million ideas for this tasty drink, and can’t wait to try them out.  If you thirst for something a little different this summer, definitely consider giving Star Rabbit Hoshi Usagi a try!  It would go great with some charred gal-bi and spicy kim chi.  I even think it would be wonderful with a barbecued hot link and some crunchy peanut slaw!

What a coincidence! We had this on Wednesday to celebrate my friend’s grant. I agree that it’s the perfect summer drink, and very food-friendly.

Totally agree. We just returned to Melbourne Australia from 3 weeks in the US and fell in love with Star Rabbit. Does anyone know where to get it in Melbourne?

Muddle/smash blackberries in a glass pour in this sake add some sprite and just a little bit of grenadine and OMG an amazing combination! You should try it!
