Review:
We go here once a month on our way to the movies. It is one of the few places we frequent, and has long been deserving of a good review!
The California Fish Grill location we usually go to is in Irvine, on the corner of Culver and Barranca. It is in the old Mervyn’s center, right next to Panera and Kinko’s. Though Mervyn’s has shut down and taken a lot of business away from the plaza, California Fish Grill remains busy with hungry customers nearly every single day.
When you go in, you walk right up to the cash register to place your order. Everything here is seafood. The only thing not from the sea is the Chicken Burrito Wrap. They have a nice selection on their menu, and you can even order a glass of Chardonnay or a Corona and lime to go with your meal.
They have fried fish, scallops, and shrimp with chips. Beer battered tacos, Ahi Tuna, Catfish, and even chowder. The most popular items, however, are the grilled fish and shrimp meal combinations. You can pick from a variety including: salmon, swordfish, mahi mahi, trout, and more. You get a choice of cajun spices or garlic butter, too. Prices for these combos range from $7.99 to $13.99, and you get a lot of food.
After you place an order, they give you a number and you go find a seat. While most people wait, they check out the sauce bar and stock up on the various chilled accompaniments and soft drinks. At this bar, you will find: New England tartar sauce, regular tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, pico de gallo, salsa verde, lemon wedges, butter, and chopped cilantro. Everything is very fresh.
White Roughy Meal (Rice Pilaf, Coleslaw, French Bread):

Iamme usually orders the white roughy and I order the halibut. We both opt in favor of cajun spices over butter. As you can see, the portions are big! I’m usually full by half, and save the other for lunch the next day.
Halibut Meal (Rice Pilaf, Coleslaw, French Bread):

The fish here is extremely fresh. We love that they leave it alone. All fish grill does is brush it with the seasoning of your choice and slap it on a piping hot charbroiler until it is just barely cooked through. This guarantees that the flesh comes out creamy, flaky, and sweet every time. We’ve never had dry fish here! We even like the coleslaw, which is dotted with crunchy slivered almonds and the occasional raisin.
Grilled Zucchini:

There aren’t a lot of vegetable options here, but one thing you might want to try is their grilled zucchini. It is so juicy, smokey, and delicious! Again, love that they don’t do anything to it and just let it shine on its own! One order costs $1.49, and could easily feed 2-3 people.
French Fries:

Iamme likes to get the french fries here. While I never order them myself, they do always come out perfectly hot and crisped. California Fish Grill sprinkles a bit of seasoning on top – some blend which includes garlic powder and paprika, I think. A side of french fries here will run you about $1.75, and – like with the grilled zucchini – can feed about 3 people.
We really enjoy eating at California Fish Grill and hope you will, too.
